In the Game

The following article is going to be featured in an upcoming newsletter by an international ministry that has agreed to endorse our ministry. More on that exciting event in the next few weeks! Please allow me to re-introduce you to WINN Ministries:

WINN Ministries serves God on the most practical level: supplying food, clothes and household goods for the poor and needy. It's not a food pantry, though, but a literal warehouse of supplies at the disposal of the Church! Working as a silent partner to over 200 churches, mostly in the Denver area, it connects people with churches, and churches with each other. (It has supplied items for missionaries in 45 different countries, but that's another amazing story!)

The founder of WINN is a former police chief and sociologist/turned pastor – Hank Salmans. Disturbed with seeing neighborhoods deteriorate and people losing hope, Hank determined there had to be a better way.  He knew that taking care of the poor, the widows and the orphans belongs to the Body of Messiah. Out of his frustration and God's answers to prayer, WINN ("We Involve Neighbors Now") was born.

The first step is connecting struggling families and individuals with a church home.  It's a core belief of this ministry that the whole person needs to be helped. Next, their pastor supplies a list of needs that WINN's "Holy Scroungers" round up for him to deliver. WINN's Resource Coordinator works to connect the pastors with additional support services that might be needed to assist them.

Businesses and individuals contribute items and/or money to help WINN function. Now 10 years old and strong as ever, it has an on-line newsletter, holds monthly outreaches, conducts Bible studies, and offers training seminars. It passionately encourages churches to research and invest in their immediate neighborhoods.

Hank’s belief is that the biggest malady we as a society suffer from is not from being physically hungry; it is from being out of relationship with one another.

To truly "love your neighbor" you have to know who they are. WINN offers congregations tools to help train up their members to reach out within their community and start building relationships one family at a time.

  The Hope of Our Calling

I know something about "die-hard" hope. I work with a diverse group of souls determined to give 100% to God. Temporarily without a warehouse, we work in an unimpressive, overly cramped office and out of multiple locations (including trailers, a barn and periodically my garage!).  What we do have is grit: old fashioned determination to stay on the job until it's finished. We continue to obey our calling because despite our circumstances, we know Who it is that we serve.

And we have hope: our hearts are filled with expectation. We may not always look like we know what we're doing, but God does, and we're following His lead. It's an awkward, uncomfortable, challenging and exciting way to live. If you're living it too, you know the joy that comes with each step that brings you closer to the goal. This is for us all:

"…we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us."  (Romans 5:3-5 NAS)

Waiting with joyful, expectant Hope,
