Would You Feed Someone Only Half A Meal ?

Of course not. Just like you wouldn't give your son a stone if he asked for a fish. But that's exactly what a lot of churches do. They open a food bank, because they want to help those in need. A Good Thing. But they end up just handing people a box of food, maybe with a scripture printed on a piece of paper, and say "Take care, God be with you."

But how did that feed the spirit? Sure, the food helps the body - but what about the rest? The Bible has a very interesting scripture:

The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
- Proverbs 18:14

Almost any Christian can tell you how faith can get you through many troubles. But what about those without faith? What about the lost, who have no heaven to store treasures in, no Comforter, no Counselor, no Spirit to stand beside them? And without that, what good is just seeing another day? That's not living, that's surviving - and the difference is a spiritual one. Christ said he came that we may have life, and more abundantly. So while feeding people is a good thing to do - I'm going to go out on a limb and say it is not enough. We are called to feed spirits, mend souls, bring the Gospel - which translated literally means "good news." And we can't do that with a handshake and a short typed scripture. We have to get to know someone, be willing to let our guard down and show them our own lives, tell them about what the Lord has done for us. Share with them - not only our resources, but also our time and spirit.

And if you think about your own Christian walk: someone did that for you. Maybe it was the example of your parents, maybe a friend or other relative. Someone's life was a 'light on the hill' for you, and it opened the door enough for the spirit to work in you. That's one of the great things about God, he gives us a chance to help each other - in the only permanent way.
